Hi there,

I am trying remesh function in Abaqus/Standard. The processs for 2D problem is to get deformed mesh from odb file followed by getting geometric part from orphan mesh part. But this process does not work for 3D problem. Abaqus does not have equivalent command to get 3D geometric part from orphan mesh part. So my question is how can I get 3D geometric part?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

Yanhang

Unfortunately I think you are in for trouble. Performing automatic meshing in 3D is significantly more difficult than in 2D, and as far as I know, ABAQUS is still working on getting the 3D remeshing features working.

If anyone knows more, let me know...

Also, BTW, why do you need to read in a 3D part? That is, why do you need to perform remeshing? Have you tried other alternatives?

Hi Jorgen,

Thanks for the reply. The reason for remesh is that I am having convergence problems with my bubble inflation FEM model. I use 8-node solid hybrid element. The constitiutive law of the material is user defined as a hyperelastic and anisotropic material. The inflated height of the bubble is comparable with the radius of the bubble. The elements, especially at the egde, are significantly distorted for the deformation/rotaion is large. For some material parameters, the simulation can not pass the stiffening regime. I have tried a couple of things and finally decided to try remesh. What alternatives would you suggest?

Thanks again,

Yanhang

I only have two ideas: (1) you can try to create an initial mesh that has deliberately distrorted elements that during the simulation become more regular, this sometimes works and sometimes doesn't; (2) if you can convert your geometry to a 2D axisymmetric, then you have many more automatic remeshing tools available.

Best of luck,
Jorgen
