Dear Dr Bergstrom,

can you suggest a material model for HDPE for my 3D simulation of a Blow Molding process with ANSYS FEA analysis.
Till now, my studies were very steel-based so I'm a beginner in working with plastics.

Best regards

Hello Eugen,

Blow molding typically involve large deformations of uncrosslinked polymers above their Tg, which is a challenging FE problem. I don't know of any material model in ANSYS that is capable of capturing the response of MDPE for this application :(

What I would do in your situation is to use a user-material model that is capable of predicting the response of MDPE at elevated temperatures. I have written two models that are candidates for this application: one is the DNF model, and the other is the Hybrid Model (HM).

You can find information about these two models on the downloads (http://www.polymerfem.com/modules.php?name=Downloads) section of this website.

Hello Dr Bergstom,

thank you for you reply.

Sorry, but I don't understand why are you talking about MDPE?
As I know there are some differences between HDPE and MDPE in their properties.

Would your models be candidates for HDPE response as well?

Regards

Eugen

Sorry, my mistake. I meant to write HDPE instead of MDPE. My other comments are still valid.

A better approach might to use CFD based software, such as polyflow or REM3D. above Tg, polymer is more a fluid than solid
