Out of curiosity I have been looking into the educational versions of some of the large FE programs. I did not find an online comparison of the different options so created my own. The following lists the costs, restrictions, and other comments.
ANSYS ED
ANSYS has an education version of their software called ANSYS ED (http://www.ansys.com/products/ed.asp). The current version is 10.0, although the full commercial version is 11. In other words, the educational version is old. The cost of ED is $200, and the software only works on Windows PCs. The software only allows for 1000 nodes in the simulation. Another limitation of this product is that it does not work with user-material subroutines :frown:
ABAQUS
The ABAQUS educational version of their software is called ABAQUS Student (http://www.simulia.com/academics/student.html). The software only works on Windows PCs. The cost of the software is $100. Only works for simulations with less than 1000 nodes, and does not support the use of user-subroutines. :frown:
LS-DYNA
LSTC has version of LS-DYNA called Limited Version (http://www2.lstc.com/). This version costs $100, works on both Linux, PCs, and other hardware. The program is limited to 10000 nodes, and allows for user-subroutines.
In summary, if you are interested in getting an educational version of a FE program then the limited version of LS-DYNA is clearly the most capable candidate. Feel free to provide comments about other FE programs suitable for educational use.
